Rinseless washing uses a purpose-formulated solution and controlled wiping process to clean a vehicle without a conventional flowing-water rinse. It can be useful where water access is limited or for lightly to moderately soiled vehicles. It is not appropriate for every condition. Heavy mud, thick sand, caked road salt or abrasive debris should be removed with a safer pre-rinse or conventional wash before towels contact paint. Product examples in this guide come from The Detail Supply Co., a detailing supply store in Ladson, South Carolina.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Rinseless wash concentrate approved for the method, such as Sweet Elite Rinseless Wash
- Multiple clean, high-quality microfiber towels or compatible wash media, such as the Korean Plush 470 10-pack
- Dedicated drying towel, such as the Dreadnought Max XL
- Measuring device for accurate dilution, such as the Proportioner - Quart, which is graduated in ounces and milliliters
- Separate tools for wheels and tires
01 — Decide whether the vehicle is a candidate
Walk around the vehicle before mixing solution. Look for sand, dried mud, heavy grit, salt crust and other material that could behave like an abrasive. If heavily contaminated, do not attempt to wipe that soil away with a rinseless towel. Use a conventional pre-rinse or another suitable method first. Change the process rather than increasing towel pressure.
For a vehicle with only light dust, a ready-to-use waterless product such as Hydro-X may be a better fit than a full rinseless wash. It is listed as an SiO2-infused waterless wash and quick detailer with a highly lubricated formula. The same rule applies: if the surface is gritty, rinse first.
02 — Mix accurately
Measure concentrate and water using the exact ratio stated by the manufacturer for the task. Rinseless products can have different recommended concentrations for washing, pre-treatment or drying aid. Do not assume one ratio applies to every product or application. Use clean water and a clean container, and label any secondary container clearly.
Sweet Elite Rinseless Wash is listed as a highly concentrated polymer and surfactant hybrid that encapsulates and lifts contaminants without a hose. Follow its label for the ratio.
A Proportioner - Quart fits many quart bottles and is graduated in ounces and milliliters, so you can measure concentrate instead of guessing. Mix in a clean 32oz Spray Bottle or bucket, and label it.
03 — Prepare multiple clean towel faces
Use more towels than you think you need. Fold each towel into manageable sections so you can expose a fresh face frequently. A used face should not return to paint. Some systems use a multi-towel method; others specify a particular wash media. Follow the product maker's procedure and do not combine methods casually.
The Korean Plush 470 10-pack is 16 by 16 inch, 470 GSM plush towels that the listing describes as suited to rinseless washes, waterless washes and quick details. The high pile gives the dirt being wiped a cushion, and a 10-pack makes the use-more-towels rule easy to follow.
04 — Work in small sections
Saturate the towel or wash media as directed. Clean a small panel area with straight, gentle passes and no unnecessary pressure. Turn to a clean face after each pass or when the towel begins to show soil. Keep the surface visibly lubricated. If the towel drags, solution dries or panel feels gritty, stop and reassess rather than forcing the wipe.
05 — Dry while the panel is clean and lubricated
Use a separate clean drying towel. Lightly blot or glide according to product instructions, avoiding pressure. A compatible drying aid may be specified by the rinseless product maker. Do not use a towel that has been used on wheels, exhausts or lower contaminated panels on upper bodywork.
The Dreadnought Max XL is a long-pile drying towel with a third layer inside to keep moisture from soaking through.
06 — Treat wheels and lower panels separately
Wheels, tires, rocker panels and rear bumpers often carry more abrasive contamination than upper paint. Use dedicated towels and tools, or clean these areas conventionally first. Never return a wheel towel to paint. If a towel becomes heavily soiled, retire it from paint use and launder appropriately.
Every tool and product named in this guide is available at The Detail Supply Co.
SAFETY & SURFACE NOTE
Rinseless washing is not safe for every soil load. Avoid contact washing over heavy grit, mud or salt deposits. Follow the product label, use clean media, and stop if the towel drags.
THE KEY POINTS
- Inspect contamination before choosing rinseless washing.
- Use exact product dilution and multiple clean towel faces.
